Thumbnails and Titles That Get Clicks (Without Clickbait)
Simple, honest rules for thumbnails and titles, the current YouTube thumbnail size rules, and how to test which version works best.
Your thumbnail and title are the first things people see. A good video with a weak thumbnail may never get watched. But tricking people does not work either. This guide gives simple, honest rules, plus YouTube's current thumbnail requirements, checked on 25 October 2026.
YouTube thumbnail size and file rules
YouTube updated its thumbnail guidance. The help page now says:
| Item | Current YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Shape (long videos) | 16:9 |
| Shape (Shorts) | 9:16 |
| Recommended size | 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos, 2160 x 3840 for Shorts |
| Minimum width | 640 pixels |
| File type | Image files such as JPG or PNG |
| File size | Up to 50 MB when uploading from a computer. Mobile limits are smaller. |
Many older guides say 1280 x 720 pixels and under 2 MB. A 1280 x 720 image is still 16:9 and above the minimum width, and a small file uploads quickly on any device, so it remains a safe choice. Larger images look sharper on big screens. Check the current rules on YouTube's "Add video thumbnails" help page if you are unsure.
Other rules:
- You need a verified account (phone verification) to upload custom thumbnails.
- Custom thumbnails for Shorts can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Thumbnails must follow the Community Guidelines. No nudity, sexual content, violence or hate. Breaking this can lead to a strike or losing thumbnail access for 30 days.
Thumbnail design rules that work
- One main subject. A face, a product or one object. Too many things make it hard to read on a phone.
- Big and close. Fill the frame. Thumbnails are often seen very small.
- Few words. If you add text, use three to five big words that add to the title, not repeat it.
- Strong contrast. Light subject on dark background or the opposite. Bright, clear colours.
- Show emotion or result. A surprised face, a finished dish, a before-and-after.
- Keep a style. Same fonts and colours across videos so fans spot you.
- Leave the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube shows the video length there.
- Test it small. Shrink it to the size of a fingernail. Can you still tell what it is?

Title rules that work
- Say what the viewer gets. "How to Fix a Slow Phone in 5 Minutes" beats "My Phone Story".
- Put the key words first. Long titles get cut off, especially on phones.
- Use words people search for. Think: what would I type to find this?
- Add curiosity, honestly. "I Tried Cooking Only With Rs 500 for a Week" makes people want to know what happened.
- Thumbnail and title work together. The title tells, the thumbnail shows. Do not repeat the same words in both.
- Avoid ALL CAPS titles. One capitalised word for emphasis is enough.
Honesty: why clickbait backfires
YouTube's spam and deceptive practices policy bans malicious clickbait: titles, thumbnails or descriptions made to trick people. YouTube's example is a title that promises a full sports match when the video only shows a clip. This can lead to removal, a warning or a strike. Repeated cases can lead to losing monetization.
Even when it is not against the rules, misleading thumbnails hurt you. People click, feel tricked and leave quickly. That tells YouTube the video did not satisfy viewers. The best rule: your video must deliver what the thumbnail and title promise, early.
Test your thumbnails and titles
YouTube Studio has a built-in A/B testing tool:
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Upload a video or open an existing one.
- Click A/B Testing next to the title or thumbnail.
- Add up to three titles, thumbnails or combinations.
- Click Done.
YouTube picks the winner by watch time, not just clicks. Tests usually finish within two weeks. You cannot test Shorts, private videos, or videos made for kids or for mature audiences. Changing the title or thumbnail during a test stops it.
Quick checklist
- Is it clear at fingernail size?
- Does the title say what the viewer gets?
- Does the video deliver that promise in the first minute?
- Does it match my channel style?
